Barbados-based burlesque glam metal industrialite Emilie Autumn brings her shredolin and "punktorian" style to State Theatre in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, Nov. 25.NOVEMBER
Thursday, Nov. 19 Neko Case Virginia’s flame-haired alt-country songstress Neko Case was writing and recording music for several years before she got street cred playing with The New Pornographers. While she’s still an active member of the Vancouver indie rock group, she’s forged quite the respectable solo career for herself with her powerfully pretty, wide-ranging vocals and clever style of songwriting. Her fifth and latest album, Middle Cyclone (Anti-), debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts, has garnered top marks from the likes of Pitchfork.com, Spin and Rolling Stone, and is lubed to land on innumerable “Best of ’09” lists. This show will most definitely sell out. (Plaza Theatre, Orlando)
Thursday, Nov. 19 Michelle Shocked A Texas-born troubadour with a drawling soprano, Michelle Shocked (real name Karen Michelle Johnston) brings a taste of blues and soul to her countrified rock ‘n’ roll. The songwriter is touring in support of her first new album in four years, Soul of my Soul, which was co-written with producer Devin Powers and touches on love, politics, and the state of the nation. (Beach Theatre, St. Pete Beach)

Thursday, Nov. 19 B.C. w/David Rosenfeld He moonlights with Tampa hip hop trio Red Tide but right now, local rap artist B.C. is making the rounds in support of his new solo release, Time Pieces: Time Capsule EP, the first in a three-part series of concept albums described as “a temporal travelogue, a sonic cultural history, and a riveting manifesto about the pop world told by a dark messenger from the future, stranded in time, and compelled to deliver a grim warning about what is coming.” Time Capsule features stripped-down old-school production with turntablism, fizzy synth action and bumpin’ drum machine beats, BC’s speedy delivery of quick-witted, more-than-a-mouthful rhymes driving it like a retrofitted DeLorean. (Tre Amici @ The Bunker, Ybor City)
Thursday, Nov. 19 Roy Zimmerman w/Grant Peeples “On my way in here tonight, I bruised my nose hugging a tree / I was late ’cause I had to stop by on my way at San Quentin, to set a criminal free / And I ran out of seven grain bee pollen macrobiotic organic sustainable medical marijuana, for my jerky knee,” belts out folk satirist Roy Zimmerman in his song, “To Be a Liberal.” The rest of his music is similarly styled, with Zimmerman singing and performing solo on acoustic guitar. (UU Dome, Tampa)
Thursday, Nov. 19 The Sheaks Fusing elements of garage rock, psychedelia, blues and retro pop, The Sheaks stage part II of their “new sound unveiling.” (Market on 7th, Ybor City)
Friday, Nov. 20 Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles / Eilen Jewell Two Boston-area alt-country songstresses bring their co-headlining tour to town; Borges offers heavy stomping roots rock while Jewell skews more towards Western-flavored folk and blues. (Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa)
Friday, Nov. 20 B.o.B. aka Bobby Ray Atlanta’s promising young dual-named hip-hop artist has toured with Kid Cudi, Asher Roth and Shwayze, among others, and was nominated as “Rookie Of The Year” at the 2009 BET Hip Hop Awards. B.o.B aka Bobby Ray has released five free mixtape downloads; his solo debut, B.O.B Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray, is due out sometime in 2010 and will be dropped by ATL-based Atlantic offshoot, Grand Hustle Records. Friday, Nov. 20 St. Pete Blues Allstars Seven blues musicians from the ’Burg perform a program of boogie woogie swing, and Chicago and jump blues by artists ranging from Muddy Waters to Big Joe Turner. (Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg)
Friday, Nov. 20 Forever the Sickest Kids / The Rocket Summer w/Sing It Loud/My Favorite Highway/Artist Vs. Poet The power pop aesthetic of Forever the Sickest Kids is marked by electronics and multi-voice emo whiny vocals; FTSK enjoyed their rise with the charting single, “Whoa Oh! (Me vs. Everyone)” from their 2007 debut, Underdog Alma Mater. The Rocket Summer is the solo recording project of alt rocker Bryce Avary, who writes his own music, sings in a smooth pop/soul-high tenor, and plays every instrument on his self-produced albums, though he tours with a full band made up of mostly high school friends. His recent release is a four-song digital EP, You Gotta Believe. Both groups hail from Dallas. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
Friday, Nov. 20 Geri X/Pat McDonald/Glasgow/Margot West West Geri X is leaving our fair shores once again, this time for the opportunities afforded by Atlanta. This isn’t Geri’s last local gig – her official send-off show is mid-December – but if you like her, you should go out and enjoy her introspective brand of alt rock while you still can; there’s no telling when or how often she’ll come back. Unless, of course, she moves back. Again. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Friday, Nov. 20 Ska is Dead IV Tour w/Mustard Plug/The Toasters/Voodoo Glow Skulls/Deal’s Gone Bad The fourth annual SID tour – revived on North American soil after a several-year absence – features four pioneering ska acts. Mustard Plug and Voodoo Glow Skulls lean more towards punk while The Toasters and Deal’s Gone Bad offer a heavier dose of reggae. (Crowbar, Ybor City)
Friday, Nov. 20 Jackson Browne Acoustic Tour Singer-songwriter Browne is the purveyor of such classic soft rock hits as 1972’s “Doctor, My Eyes,” 1977’s “Running on Empty” and 1982’s “Sombody’s Baby.” His star has waxed and waned over the years, but he’s strummed his guitar and exuded his easy-going charm right through it. This series of stripped down performances follows several months of plugged-in shows promoting his well-regarded 2008 album, Time the Conqueror, and coincides with his other ’08 release, Jackson Browne – Solo Acoustic, Vol. 2. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater)
Friday, Nov. 20 David Crowder Band Texas six-piece DCB has four full-lengths of progressive, roots-tinged electro Christian rock under their belt and are celebrating the release of a fifth, Church Music. (Countryside Christian Center, Tampa)
Friday, Nov. 20 98 Rock Girl Show w/Steel Panther/Halestorm/Adelita’s Way A group that parodies glam metal in all its long-haired, bandana-wearing glory, comedians/musicians Steel Panther headline this 98Rock-sponsored show that also serves as a pageant-style babe-against-babe competition for the title(s) of “98Rock Girl.” Not sure what it means, exactly, but I do know that at some point, the contestants will take the stage in bikinis. (The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City)
Saturday, Nov. 21 The Revival Tour feat. Chuck Ragan (of Hot Water Music) w/Jim Ward/Frank Turner/John Snodgrass/Chad Price/The Zydepunks Apparently, last year’s tour featuring several punk and garage frontmen performing solo and collaborative sets of material in an acoustic roots format was a success. Ragan (Hot Water Music) returns for the second round, and is joined by (among others) Drag the River’s Snodgrass and Price, and Ward (currently of Sparta, formerly of At the Drive In). (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
Saturday, Nov. 21 Poetry ’n Lotion w/Jim Morey Band/Infinite Groove Orchestra This bill features a trio of jazz-influenced locals – rock fusionists PNL, neo-jazz foursome JMB and funk-in-spacers IGO. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Saturday, Nov. 21 Rock For Choice w/Sons of Hippies/Megan Alfredson/Inertia A femme-centric bill of area acts play in support of women's reproductive rights and to raise money for to W.O.M.E.N., the Women's Organization for Medical Emergency Needs. (Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa)
Saturday, Nov. 21 Rebirth Brass Band Among the elite of New Orleans brass bands is 27-year-old Rebirth. Led by tuba/sousaphone player Philip Frazier and his brother, bass drummer Keith Frazier, the nine-piece (which also includes three trumpeters, a saxophonist, two trombone players and a snare drummer) flavors their high-spirited brass with funk, jazz, soul and hip hop. (Largo Cultural Center, Largo)
Saturday, Nov. 21 Stacey Earle & Mark Stuart The husband-and-wife Americana duo – which set their winding two-part harmonies against lovely acoustic melodies – hails from Tennessee and is currently enjoying their last tour together as a two-person project before each flies solo for a while. Never fear – the marriage is still very much intact. (Craftsman House Gallery, St. Petersburg)

Wednesday, Nov. 25 Marduk w/Black Anvil/Mantic Ritual/Merrimack/Nachtmystium (Brass Mug, Tampa)
Wednesday, Nov. 25 Underoath w/August Burns Red/Emery Few chart-topping bands classify themselves as Christian metalcore, but that brand of music is exactly how Tampa’s own Underoath found success. After participating in the Van’s Warped Tour this summer, the band is touring the country through December to rock the faces off fans with songs from their latest release, Lost in the Sound of Separation as well as from past albums like Define the Great Line, which first got them onto the Billboard 200 chart back in 2006. Underoath is joined by Emery and fellow Christian-influenced rockers August Burns Red. (The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City) –Kristina Welch
Wednesday, Nov. 25 Jill Andrews w/Matt Butcher/Will Quinlan Kick off your Thanksgiving weekend right with rootsy music by Andrews (of Tennessee’s Everybodyfields), and local songwriters Butcher and Quinlan in a show billed as a “special all-acoustic/solo-duo evening of songwriting skills with tales to be told.” (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Wednesday, Nov. 25 Emilie Autumn (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
Thursday, Nov. 26 Gil Mantera's Party Dream Gil Mantera's Party Dream The duo-turned-trio from Ohio produces synthtastic New Wave-flavored pop melodies with overaffected and vocoder robotic vocals trading off over bleeptastic beats. This is the band’s second round in town since the release of their 2009 album, Dreamscape, and their live show is worth checking out for sure. Frontmen/maybe-brothers Ultimate Donny and Gil Mantera are ringmasters of absurdity in tacky spandex who bring a sort of gross animal magnetism to their alcohol-fueled, performance art chaos. (Crowbar, Ybor City)
Friday, Nov. 27 Paul Van Dyk Among the elite of electronic music artists is Berlin-based DJ/producer Paul van Dyk, who’s been doling out his trance dancing beats since the early ’90s. His current winter tour supports Volume: The Best of Paul van Dyk, a collection that draws from his studio debut, 1994’s 45 RPM, his Grammy-nominated Reflections (2003) and his most recent, 2007’s In Between. (The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City)
Friday, Nov. 27 Pink Floyd's "The Wall" WMNF 30th Anniversary Re-creation w/The Vodkanauts and special guests It’s been more than three decades since Roger Waters wrote the semi-autobiographical outline of Pink Floyd’s bleak prog rock opera, The Wall, a double album that deals with themes of alienation via the story of a tortured musician and the barriers that keep him from becoming a functioning member of society. The latest fundraiser for WMNF features a full-scale performance of the venerated album in its entirety. Retro rockin’ fivesome The Vodkanauts play as an “enhanced” lineup with musical guests fleshing out The Wall’s vocals and instrumentals – Brian Merrill and Stan Arthur of The Ditchflowers, singers Heather Harrison, Mich Sullivan and Freight Train Annie, and Dan LaJoy of The Lake Audition. Rubix Cubed and Rebekah Pulley and the Reluctant Prophets kick off the show with their own sets of (non-Wall) Floyd covers. (Largo Cultural Center, Largo)
Friday, Nov. 27 Rusted Root The Pennsylvania septet seasons their jamgrassy rock with world percussion influences, and enjoyed some minor fame with the spirited, Billboard charting single “Send Me on My Way” off their second release and major label debut, 1994’s When I Woke. The band released Stereo Rodeo, their first album of new material in seven years, in March; this tour supports the album and the band’s 20th anniversary. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
Friday, Nov. 27 Megadeth w/Machine Head (Hard Rock Live, Orlando)
Friday, Nov. 27 Damon Fowler (Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa)
Friday, Nov. 27 David Cook w/The Script/Green River Ordinance Seventh season American Idol winner David Cook got Tampa watchers rooting for him for reasons that reached beyond his talent – the orange wristband the rockin’ singer-songwriter wore in Idol was to show support for a young local fan battling leukemia. Cook’s self-titled 2008 album was produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls) and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA. (Mahahffey Theater, St. Petersburg)
Friday, Nov. 27-Sunday, Nov. 29 Classical Mystery Tour with The Florida Orchestra Last season, The Florida Orchestra performed the music of Pink Floyd with a full band and psychedelic lights. This season, conveniently close to the release of the re-masters and a resurgence of interest in the Fab Four, TFO pays tribute to The Beatles with Classical Mystery Tour. Actor/musicians from Broadway’s Beatlemania – Jim Owen on rhythm guitar and piano, Tony Kishman on bass and piano, Tom Teeley on lead guitar and Chris Camilleri on drums as John, Paul, George and Ringo, respectively – perform note perfect renditions of Beatles hits ranging from “Yesterday” (presented on acoustic guitar with a string quartet), to “A Day in the Life” (complete with live orchestral crescendo). The foursome also draws on solo Lennon and McCartney songs, and executes costume changes throughout the night to represent different eras in Beatles history. (Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Tampa, Friday; and Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg, Saturday and Sunday)
Saturday, Nov. 28 Mother's Finest Mother's Finest Underrated race- and gender-integrated Southern funk rock ensemble Mother’s Finest never enjoyed the mainstream success or made the cultural impact of their predecessors, Sly & the Family Stone, but the Atlanta-based sextet definitely made some ripples with their self-titled debut in 1976 and its follow-up, 1977’s Another Mother Further. Both albums feature hard funkadelic rhythms, Moog solos, and the throaty soulful vocals of lead singer Joyce Kennedy. The band has a rep for putting on high-spirited live shows; get out your groovin’ boots and get ready to get down. (The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City)
Saturday, Nov. 28 MAWFEST! w/Crash Mitchell/The Tim Version/The Lake Audition/Zero Time Ghost This benefit concert is staged by local raucous rocker Crash Mitchell in tribute to his late friend, Robyn Curtiss, who passed away in August. (According to Crash’s email, “I always called her Maw, hence MawFest.”) Proceeds support Curtiss’ immediate family and go towards expenses accumulated from her memorial and funeral services. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Saturday, Nov. 28 Wayne Koerner Benefit w/Crash Mitchell (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Saturday, Nov. 28 Thomas Wynn and the Believers w/Shak Nasti (Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa)
Saturday, Nov. 28 Skinny Puppy Originally formed in 1982 by drummer cEvin Key and vocalist Nivek Ogre (real names Kevin Crompton and Kevin Ogilvie, respectively), Skinny Puppy is a dark, avant-industrial metal group that has influenced scores of like-acts with their experimental, pioneering recording techniques (layering, tape-splicing, distortion) and use of synthesizers, drum machines, samplers and found sounds. Skinny Puppy is also known for controversial performance art-style live shows marked by improvisation, visual projections, and elaborate stage props and machines. Key and Ogre, the band’s only constant members, parted ways in 1995, reunited in 2000, released their first new album in eight years in 2004, The Greater Wrong of the Right, and then 2007’s Mythmaker; a new album, In Solvent See, is planned for 2010. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
Sunday, Nov. 29 The Nilla w/Shangri-La (Orpheum, Ybor City)
Sunday, Nov. 29 R. Kelly w/Marcus “Pleasure P” Cooper Any artist who can still play 2,600-seat venues and wrangle no less than $50 per ticket after making headlines for allegedly peeing on a minor should get a little credit for staying power. And the three-time Grammy-winning R&B singer-songwriter-producer R. Kelly does have rather nice pipes, if a questionable sexual history. This show is part of his “Ladies Make Some Noise” tour and takes place on the eve of the release of his ninth studio album, Untitled, out December 1 on Jive Records. (Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Tampa)
Sunday, Nov. 29 Sweetwater Sunday Afternoon Market Music Series w/Triad/Charley Groth (Sweetwater Organic Community Farm, Tampa)
Sunday, Nov. 29 Raphael Saadiq Formerly of Tony! Toni! Toné, currently rolling solo with great success, R&B singer-songwriter-producer Saadiq worked with Stevie Wonder, Joss Stone and Jay-Z on his critically-acclaimed 2008 album, The Way I See It, which got three Grammy Nominations and was voted Best Album of 2008 on iTunes. (Plaza Theatre, Orlando)
Sunday, Nov. 29 Benefit Concert For the People Of El Salvador w/Alfredo Rivero and Manigua/Ray Villadonga and PBS/Point 6/Somos Musica/Baye Kouyate A benefit featuring world flavors of Latin rock and jazz, flamenco, salsa y merengue, Afro beat and more to benefit the Mission of Mercy, a group of doctors, nurses and volunteers who provide medical supplies and free health care to thousands of sick and poor El Salvadorans every year. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)
Sunday, Nov. 29 Sharon Scott’s Palladium Praise Party Local actress-singer Sharon Scott leads a program of traditional and contemporary gospel music with a seven-piece back-up band, a children’s group, gospel group and other musical guests. (Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg)
Monday, Nov. 30 Roger Daltrey He’s the iconic curly-haired frontman of The Who (which may or may not be reuniting next year). On this latest “Use It or Lose It” solo tour, Daltrey performs his own adaptations of Who songs, solo material, and covers that pay tribute to his influences and favorite contemporaries. (Setlists from recent shows have included “Who Are You,” “Baba O’Riley,” “I Can See for Miles,” and a Johnny Cash medley.) According to the press release, Daltrey has chosen more intimate venues because “I want to give people a good night out. The economic situation being what it is these days, I think that’s what they want: to go out and feel they’ve had a good jolly-up.” Selling tickets for a minimum of $62.50 isn’t really helping the current economic climate, but the sentiment is nice, I guess. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater)
DECEMBER
Tuesday, Dec. 01 Miley Cyrus w/Metro Station The Disney-processed pop phenomenon and daughter of country music star Billy Ray got famous from her acting gig on the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana, and has turned her TV persona (normal teen by day, famous pop singer by night) into a hugely lucrative real life music career, which means we get continuous newsblips about every move and snotty remark she makes. The latest was during an interview about her hit single, “Party in the U.S.A.” and its lyric, “and the Jay Z song was on.” Miley, who didn’t write the song, insisted she’d never heard anything by Jay-Z, wasn’t really into pop music, and that her single “is not even my style of music … Honestly, I picked that song because I needed something to go with my clothing line.” Deep. (St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa)
Tuesday, Dec. 01 Kenny Rogers Christmas Hits Tour As the title of his tour suggests, country music singer-songwriter Kenny Rogers is taking his holiday show on the road and performing hits like “The Gambler” and “Islands in the Stream” alongside songs drawn from his seven Christmas albums, which include original numbers as well as classics and modern standards. Rogers will be joined for select numbers by the PCCA Gibbs High School Choir. Concert attendees who bring a non-perishable food donation for America’s Second Harvest of Tampa Bay will be entered into a drawing for a “Christmas and Hits” prize package and a chance to meet in person Rogers before his performance. (Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg)
Wednesday, Dec. 02 Skindred w/Stuck/Falling Awake/Nine Mile Drive Skindred hails from Wales, and produces a driving blend of reggae, metal and punk rock marked by the lead vocals and electronic stylings of dreadlocked frontman, Benji Webbe, who sings, toasts and roars in a gravelly-deep, Caribbean-spiced brogue.
