FEBRUARY

Tuesday, Feb. 09 Sondre Lerche w/JBM Norway’s buttery-voiced singer-songwriter made our “100 Best Albums of the Decade” list with his 2004 album, Two-Way Monologue, a perfect gem of sweetly poignant pop melodies and vibrant instrumental arrangements. His fifth studio effort, 2009’s Heartbeat Radio, is also rather fantastic, the title track a bright and clever-catchy love song with acoustic guitar, string embellishments, and a high-kicking rhythm. (The Social, Orlando)

Tuesday, Feb. 09 Pine Hill Haints Taking their name from a cemetery in the town where frontman Jamie Barrier was raised, the Pine Hill Haints produce a self-described style of “Alabama ghost country music” that combines the flavors of bluegrass, folk, Southern roots, honky tonk and alt-country. Barrier belts out their rousing tunes in a homegrown drawl and plays guitar, wife Katie “Kat” Barrier sits in on washboard and mandolin, Ben Rhyne brings snare drum rhythms, Matt Bakula performs on washtub bass and banjo, and Mike Posey rounds it all out with his accordion harmonies. (Dave's Aqua Lounge, St. Petersburg)

Tuesday, Feb. 09 Reverend Raven & The Chain Smokin' Altar Boys He played in some blues bands before joining the Navy in 1976, bought an electric guitar while stationed in downtown Chicago, spent some time gigging on the weekends, and eventually tried his hand at full-time Chicago blues musiciandom when he was released from active duty. He teamed up with fiery harmonica player Madison Slim in Milwaukee and started the Chain Smokin Altar Boys in 1996. (Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa)

Wednesday, Feb. 10 Bowerbirds w/Julie Doiron/Geri X Raleigh, N.C.’s Bowerbirds are currently touring in support of their second full-length LP, Upper Air, an album that returns to the band’s wild mountain folk and rustic pop music with quietly fiery moments interrrupted by slow, meandering introspection. For this tour, the trio is joined by mandolin player Will Hackney. Canada singer-songwriter Julie Doiron provides support and Geri X returns from her new Atlanta home to open with a set of solo acoustic material. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)

Wednesday, Feb. 10 Black Eyed Peas w/Ludacris The funky foursome made up of will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo and Fergie took time off in 2005 to focus on their solo careers. Fergie scored big with five hit singles, including “Glamorous” with Ludacris and “London Bridge,” the latter title a seeming euphemism for her panties; will.i.am produced hits for Pussycat Dolls and Estelle. The Peas re-grouped in 2009 and released The E.N.D., which featured two of the year’s biggest hits – “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling” – and shared the No. 1 and 2 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 for 26 consecutive weeks. Catch them on “The E.N.D. World Tour” if you haven’t gotten sick of them yet. (St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa) --Matthew Spencer

Wednesday, Feb. 10 Will.I.Am DJ Set w/ Redfoo/Shy Blu (The Venue, St. Petersburg)

Wednesday, Feb. 10 Cold Cave w/Night Jewel Experimental synth pop trio Cold Cave signed to Matador Records in 2009 and enjoyed a re-release of their debut LP, Love Comes Close, this past November. Their music is infused with elements of post punk, New Wave and industrial electronica, the dark and pulsing numbers marked by the Xanax calm baritone of Wesley Eisold, who also fronts hardcore outfit Give Up the Ghost, and the sweeter contrasting tone of ex-Xiu Xiu multi-instrumentalist Caralee McElroy. (Crowbar, Ybor City)

Thursday, Feb. 11 Mike Doughty Last year, singer-songwriter Mike Doughty (the former frontman of Soul Coughing) released his third solo album, Sad Man Happy Man, another solid acoustic guitar-driven effort marked by minor production, instrumental embellishments, and Doughty’s low and rusty-textured tone delivering his cleverly poetic commentary on anything from fighting the system and life’s little triumphs to women, love and relationships. On his current “Question Jar Show” tour, Doughty brings cellist and electric guitar player Andrew “Scrap” Livingston along for the ride and presents a new and appealing segment to his set: a jar on stage where attendees can submit questions on any topic — “obscure, weird, or esoteric questions accepted happily.” Doughty will randomly select and answer said questions between songs. Should make for some interesting banter. (Orpheum, Ybor City)

Thursday, Feb. 11 Frankie Valli & Four Seasons (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater)

Thursday, Feb. 11 Matt Butcher/Rebekah Pulley/Red Shepherd Americana musician Matt Butcher has only been living in Florida since 1999, but within those 11 years he’s joined a few bands, had some success as part of The Heathens — an Orlando-based band that made some waves in 2006 when the music video for their song “Stickin’ Around” was featured at the Los Angeles Film Festival — and earned a two-night solo gig opening for The Avett Brothers in Tennessee. His 2008 album, Me and My Friends, received stellar reviews and is available on Butcher’s website for a “pay what you can” fee a-la Radiohead. Butcher is joined multi-Best of the Bay award-winning singer/songwriter songstress Rebekah Pulley, and sunny folk-pop quartet Red Shepherd. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) –Matthew Spencer

Friday, Feb. 12 The Wailers 40 Years Of Fams Tour Bombastic bassist Aston “Familyman” Barrett – who was Bob Marley’s right-hand man and musical director of The Wailers in the ’60s – fronts this incarnation of the legendary reggae group (not to be confused with The Original Wailers featuring Al Anderson and Junior Marvin). (The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City)

Friday, Feb. 12 Jeffrey Osborne The last couple of years have seen a resurgence of sorts for R&B crooner Jeffrey Osborne. His music has showed up in shows like Alley McBeal and The Office, and can even be heard in the latest installment of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto. Despite having a career that’s spanned four decades with multiple hit singles like “You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song)” and “Stay With Me Tonight,” the 61-year-old singer/songwriter/drummer is likely best known for his 1982 international hit, “On The Wings Of Love.” The song is currently the punch line for a recurring gag on The Soup, but it’s sure to remain a staple of wedding DJs across the world for a long time. (Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg) –Matthew Spencer

Friday, Feb. 12 Morningbell w/Gentlemen Please Gainesville’s eclectic rock quartet Morningbell have honed their psychedelic style for the last 10 years with a revolving door of drummers, an appearance at Bonnaroo and four well-received LPs on Gainesville’s nonprofit label, Orange Records. Their most recent effort, 2009’s Sincerely, Severely, is laden with groovy percussion and sticky hooks delivered with gusto by lead guitarist Travis Atria. The band is also known for live performances marked by a spectacle of Christmas bulbs and strobes they’ve branded the “100-dollar light show.” See them light up the stage in Ybor before their appearance at SXSW in March. Indie newcomers Gentlemen Please open.  (New World Brewery, Ybor City) –Matthew Spencer

Friday, Feb. 12 Harry Connick, Jr. Three-time Grammy-winner and multi-platinum pop jazz crooner Harry Connick, Jr. brings his swinging orchestra to town in support of his most recent Columbia Records release, Your Songs. The collection of covers were selected by producer Clive Davis, and range from The Beatles’ “And I Love Her” and Elton John’s “Your Song,” to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Some Enchanted Evening” and “Bésame Mucho” by Consuelo Velázquez. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater)

Friday, Feb. 12 2010 Sub City Take Action Tour w/We the Kings/Mayday Parade/A Rocket to the Moon/There for Tomorrow/Stereo Skyline The ninth annual cross-country charity concert tour benefits Driving For Donors, a traveling bone marrow match registry created to help people in need of a transplant. Ten percent of each ticket goes to the organization, and onsite registration for the National Marrow Registry is available at every tour stop. Among the bill’s highlights are two Florida acts – Bradenton power pop favorites We the Kings, and Tallahassee emo alt rock fivesome Mayday Parade, which signed to Atlantic and released their major label debut, Anywhere But Here, last year. Mayday Parade also plays an afternoon acoustic set at Hot Topic in St. Petersburg’s Tyrone Square Mall. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)

Friday, Feb. 12 Willie Heath Neal Deep-voiced outlaw countryman Willie Heath Neal has toured with the likes of Hank Williams III and Reverend Horton Heat, his brand of honky tonkin’ at times slow and rambling, or speedy and direct. Neal put out his fourth studio album, Out of Highway, last year. (Emerald Bar, St. Petersburg)

Friday, Feb. 12 Tides of Man (Orpheum, Ybor City)

Friday, Feb. 12 Tannahill Weavers More than three decades ago, Scotland five-piece Tannahill Weavers introduced the customarily solo Great Highland Bagpipe into ensemble compositions and are credited with influencing the sound of traditional Scottish music thereafter.(Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa)

Friday, Feb. 12 Evan Dando & The Lemonheads Long, long ago, in a music era far, far away, there were the original easy alt rockin’ Lemonheads, and singer Evan Dando, with his long flowing hair, sensitive green eyes and pleasantly low tone, was the lead lemon (and the band’s only constant member to date). The AC-friendly “Into Your Arms” is still the group’s biggest hit – if you don’t count their popular rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson” – but Dando continues to tour successfully under the Lemonheads moniker 17 years later, and brings a more roots-flecked sound to his current music. His 2009 album, Varshons, is a suite of covers that features a rather splendid duet with Liv Tyler in Leonard Cohen’s melancholy “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye.” (Crowbar, Ybor City)

Saturday, Feb. 13 Yonder Mountain String Band Colorado foursome Yonder Mountain String Band has carved out a niche of jam scene fans with their wild and fiery live shows. YMSB’s rockin’ newgrass is played on mandolin, guitar, banjo and upright bass, and at a typical two-set show, the band peppers their own catalog of originals with fast and fun covers of songs like Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious  Minds,” the Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post,” and even Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train.” (The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City)

Saturday, Feb. 13 Alter Reign / Shadows of the Statue / Shades of Twilight / Ares / more TBA (Gasoline Alley, Largo)

Saturday, Feb. 13 Worldwide Zoo CD Release Party Michael Zabrek’s heady keys provides spooky Rhodes vibes or funked-out Hammond flavor, Santiago Rodriguez drops lowend bombs or draws out atmospheric delays, and Jason Stander keeps the steady groove – that is, when the trio isn’t freeforming along and stretching it as far out there as they can go. Tampa’s jazz fusion trio Worldwide Zoo sets their sound to disc and debuts the self-titled CD at this release party. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)

Saturday, February 13 Take It Back w/Ambush/Continuance/Call To Preserve/CDC/Proclaim & Endure/Under Wraps/Bound By Honor (Transitions Gallery at Skatepark of Tampa)

Saturday, Feb. 13 Perry Danos: The Greek Sinatra (Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center, Tarpon Springs)

Saturday, Feb. 13 Gladys Knight There are so many eras of Gladys Knight: the early ’60s slow R&B of “Every Beat of My Heart,” the funkier ‘70s roll in “Midnight Train to Georgia,” the ‘80s cheese soul fourway of “That’s What Friends Are For” with Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder and Elton John, the smooth ’90s sassiness of “Men.” The ‘00s have seen love songs (At Last), gospel music (One Voice), a homage to the holidays (A Christmas Celebration) and in 2006, some popular classics like George and Ira Gershwin’s “The Man I Love” and Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday,” among others. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater)

Saturday, Feb. 13 Bobby "Treacherous" Callahan CD Release Party (Crowbar, Ybor City)

Sunday, Feb. 14 Flogging Molly w/Frank Turner The high-spirited Celtic punk rock septet hails from LA and incorporates Bodhran, accordion, concertina, violin, tin whistle, Uilleann pipes, mandolin, mandola, tenor banjo, five-string banjo, and percussion into their sound to add lush, authentic textures. This show is SOLD OUT. (The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City)

The concert is free if you have an annual pass; otherwise, it’s the price of a single-day ticket. Get there early and ride SheiKra. (Busch Gardens, Tampa)

Sunday, Feb. 14 That 1 Guy Mike Silverman is That 1 Guy, a bassist wizard turned one-man band whose primary instrument is his homemade “Magic Pipe,” a seven-foot tall assemblage of orchestral bass strings, steel plumbing pipes and joints, and electronics. He also plays musical saw and the odd percussion instrument, uses digital looping and sampling to perform his songs as he sings and beatboxes along, and of late, has incorporated lasers into the live mix. (Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa)
