Another fabulous indie act from Portland, Mimicking Birds (pictured) began as the solo home recording project of singer-songwriter-guitarist Nate Lacy, and evolved into a live act featuring supplementary/lead guitarist Tim Skellenger and drummer Aaron Hanson. Lacy crafts touching acoustic pop songs with tender melodies and sweetly harmonizing vocals. The band plays a free parking lot party at WMNF Studios in the afternoon (3-4 p.m.) followed by a set in Ybor City later that night. Sat., Nov. 7, 9 p.m., New World Brewery, Ybor City, $7.

Routes Music rewind, New Orleans: Living Room Studio, Lovie Dovies, the Blackbelt Band (video)

It's 8 p.m. and Phil is driving through a torrential rainstorm in an abandoned part of New Orleans' West End. He's running his hand through his hair, bent over the steering wheel, trying to find Magellan Road. The GPS isn't working and every road seems to lead back to the interstate we just exited. A tiny brown Chihuahua looks lost, too, as it darts across the road and between two houses. It's enough rain to make any New Orleans native nervous.
