amen, brother eric, AMEN! the vocoder and talkbox are fine when used for good, not evil. even auto-tune has a place. lets say your band just finished the tracking your new disk. when you start mixing, you find that one little second where the singer is off a hair and it clashes with that last guitar overdub you did. hit that one second with the auto-tune or something similar and knock that one second of vox track into place. or just have your singer redo that verse. or just record everything live at once and say "fuck it. you either like or you don't. this is exactly what we sound like". ok, off track a bit, sorry.
music should be honest. an dumb-ass with a drum machine, a used nord and a computer can put out an album that sounds exactly like t-pain, britney or almost anything on mainstream radio. there is little to no artistry behind it. it is not honest. technically, it's music; but it only meets the bare minimum requirements to be considered as such.
there is only one way to stop this plague. money; or more specifically the lack of money. when people stop buying crap from folks who depend on tricks like auto-tune to fake their way through albums and "live" shows, record companies will stop putting it out. but unfortunately, the corporate overloads of the major labels will have already moved on to their next gimmick. maybe one day that gimmick will be bands who really write, play and sing their own music without some suit looking over their shoulder, whispering about the bottom line and points for the producer in the band's ear.

Another listener supported show this week, we're taking a look at McMenamins Brewery out of Portland, Oregan. With many locations across the Pac Northwest, the brewpub is definitely making an impact in the beer scene in that part of the country. Luckily, we're able to try some of their offerings down here in the South this week. We're trying two of their beers this week - the Sunflower IPA and the Terminator Stout. In addition to beer, McMenamins also has a distillery, makes wine, and coffee as well. How does this multifacted producer fare in the beer world? We'll let you know, just listen! Got a favorite beer from your region? Send it our way and we'll try it on the show! Email us at podcast [at] davisondraft [dot] com. Sampled this week: McMenamins: Sunflower IPA and Terminator Stout.
