Balls Deep

How much coke was snorted during the creation of the posts above me? A lot I'm sure.

YUM!

We had the maytag deviled eggs as an app. I had the Chipotle BBQ Pork Tenderloin with jalapeņo goat cheese creamed corn. The food was fantastic, the wait staff was extremly friendly and the kiwi/strawberry mojito was yummy. Thanks folks...we will be back!

My mouth is still watering!

Dined here on a recommendation by The Vinoy and it was truly superb! I am a traveling salesman and I have eaten all over the country and this was delicious! I had the Duck Breast and Wok Shrimp Appetizer! They were perfectly executed and mouth watering! Can't wait to tell all my friends and thank the concierge for her wonderful recommendation! Wish there was a Z Grille in Houston!

I read all of these comments looking for a place to go locally while in town. I am a Sarasota native and I love to try new places. I was a bit confused by the comments mentioning Tacos, so I did a little investigating and discovered that Z Grille has been in two locations and the old one is where the Tacos came from. I decided to try both! I went to Zurritos, which was the old location and was guided through the menu by none other than Ray himself. He was very informative and let me know the whole story. I actually loved the Tacos I ate and decided that later I would venture to Z Grille, the new location. I had seen the write up and was excited to see the interior. It was really unexpected. I actually recognized the owners and asked the bartender who they were and it was obvious. They both were working along with their staff and seemed to be having a great time doing it! I was happy that in the end I didnt listen to the negative comments because they couldnt have been more out in left field as far as my experience! It was completely memorable and one I wish to be reoccuring on my future ventures to St Petersburg!
   Kudos and much Success!!!

AMAZING FOOD, GREAT PEOPLE

Recently I had the great pleasure of dining at z grille 2 nights in row. It was all by chance the first night that I happened to go into the restaurant. I was greeted by a friendly person at the door and said I wanted to sit at the bar since I was alone. The hostess said something about how fun the it would be to sit there and made me feel very welcome and at home. I later discovered that she was Jennifer one of the owners. The warmth and friendliness continued with both patrons and the bartenders. Abby, the bartender is fantastic! Todd as well. Being new to the restaurant I always like to ask what the staff recommends. Abby was very helpful. The guy and his wife sitting next to me at the bar threw in the support of Abby's suggestions and I was set. The food was OUTSTANDING. It was so good I went back the following night. When I sat the bar Abby greeted with "Hi Darrell". I had another amazing meal. This night I was fortunate enough to be at the restaurant when things wound downa little and got to meet Zack and Jennfifer and chat a little. They were real, fun, and humble. I don't know where the complainers ate but it sure wasn't the place I had such a great experience.
Now I am no longer a local. I grew up in St Pete and come back occasionally for family. I consider myself a foodie that's been fortunate enough to have some of the best food there is to be had. NYC, LA, Buenos Aires, Rome anywhere would be lucky to have Z Grille. I wish them much success!

How To Fail At Good Customer Service by Z-Grille

Wow Z-Grille and Jennifer! Needless to say I will never spend so much as the fake money I just printed at this restaurant. I've been intrigued, since everytime I walk by, its closed, but it is usually after 11pm. Jennifer has big balls defending the honor of Ray and her Dead Sea Salt Specialties. Although the personalities and level of integrity amongst veteran waitstaff runs the gamut from wonderful to dispicable, it is often a direct representation of the owners and management, who seem to me to be pretty lame. I'm calling my bookie to see what the over/under on Z-Grille's life expectancy is, as I think the under will prevail. If you need a tasty taco and a beer while downtown, go around the corner to Burrito Boarder, or over to Zapata's. You'll have more money in your pocket, and no Ray up in your grille(sic)!

Awesome

I don't know where those other reviewers ate but it wasn't the Z-Grill I went to. Met at the door by Jennifer, our party of eight was welcomed into the restaurant and immediately made welcome to the experience of the Z-Grill. We found the wait staff to be informative and helpful in making our selections from the amazing array of spicy, delectable appetizers, salads, and entrees. From the California Deviled Eggs to the Doctor Pepper Ribs to the Pecan Crusted Brie each of us tried a different appetizer and none of us were disappointed. I tried the Pork Tenderloin for dinner and found the surprise of the course to be the Jalepeno Goat Cheese Creamed Corn it sat on. This combination was really a delight and I reccomend to all.

Douche Baggery!

The owners at Z-Grille have joined the ranks of the douche bags at Ceviche. In other words, their success has definetely gone to their heads! Well, that and just not being very well bred people in the first place.

You can't expect a lot from people who are arrogant, competitive (on a personal and business level) and just generally unwilling to consider that they may be wrong and need to apologize!

The nonsense above is totally "Jennifer Gross" and the typical b.s. many people, both employees and guests, have dealt with at Z-Grille.

   Time to go somewhere else!

Owners who respond usually lose.

   Wow.

I'm not sure what happened in the case of the folks above, and I'm sure it took "two to tango". However, I came here looking for a place to take some associates for dinner (we're small business owners ourselves) - and as a result of Jennifer's comments - will keep looking.

Lady, if you just let a bad comment go - it looks like a disgrutled customer, when you get into it with them like this, it makes them look right.

And a loyal employee who costs you money isn't a loyal employee. If they were they would be more considerate towards your business and what you're trying to build.

Final Response!!!

   Dear "Foodie",
Obviously you must work in a quick service job. We are not quick service nor do we practice giving gift certificates away to people. We are not corporate. We are a mom and pop restaurant. I respect the fact that you won't come back. I'm glad you gave us a try! In all honesty sometimes the customer is a nightmare and they aren't wanted back. You bought dinner at our restaurant and you enjoyed everything (cleaned your plate in fact) with the exception of two items. You didn't purchase a home, or car & no one died. You bought dinner and the bottom line is for you to be that upset for this long is ashamed. Life's to short. Get over it! But please don't threaten me for the second time with "it takes only one time, and 1 unhappy customer=10." That is childish and bitter. We appreciate you trying us and sorry things didn't work out in the way you wanted, but I have to trust what my employee states to me in regards to the situation that occurred and that is that.
You left a few things out of your story so feel free to trash us all you want. I know what we produce and I am happy with it. Sometimes it may not be perfect all the time, but what is? Sorry to you and your family.
Thanks and have a great day.
   Jennifer

To Jennifer

I appreciate you taking the time to respond to our comments. I love kosher salt, and I shake it all over my Edamame; the amount of salt in the risotto and the rice that night literally induced a gag reflex. I should have had Ray try it - if it was up to normal standards, that's fine then I would understand. Also, I wouldn't have minded if the server handled the situation better or if the food was all good (I don't need customer service if the food is good). In the end of the day, as a paying customer, you end up feeling taken advantage of.

   Follow up:
I called the restaurant a few days later, and asked to speak to the person in charge. When I explained my situation (I was on the one of the phone saying sorry, being nice and understanding) and the guy flat out told me sorry but I can't do anything for you. Really?
Wow. I even told him, I am a foodie and would like to give your restaurant another try and I asked if he could provide a gift certificate. Why would a manager/restaurant not want to make sure to take care of the customer if he/she is legitimately upset because of poor service/prodcut. That's bad business practice. It's not like I was taking advantage of you guys. It really amazes me that the manager and owners are so nonchalant about the situation (I mean it's STILL bothering me). At my quick-service job, we were always bull-shitting around, having fun with each other and our regulars. But customers come first. I'm still confused. And still so frustrated and angry. By the way Z, 1 unhappy customer=10 (or more) potentials that will never come your way.

This comment is to the two people who left recent comments.
I am very sorry that you say you had bad service. Unfortunately I must have not been there those evenings.
Ray has been a server with us since we opened, and while he may not be the most friendly at times he is very loyal, trust worthy and honest. All of which are hard to find in this field.
I am one that agrees service is of the utmost importance. I am very particular when I go out. I know that the majority of our regular customers love him, so I have to go with that.
As for the saltiness. We use Kosher Salt. It is hearty and thicker in texture compared to most places. It is all a personal preference. I am sensitive to salt myself. But I love our chips and just them brush off the excess salt. Like it or not thats our chips and that is how we prepare them.
I am not expecting you to return and that is fine. It sounds as if you have formed your opinions.
I don't think that $98 is a lot of money for tacos and beer. We are not Taco Bell. Some of our beers are $10 and our tacos are under $11. You either had a lot of beer or a lot of tacos.
On a final note Ray is an asshole sometimes, but that's what I love about him! We are all fun loving people if you know us and that is the bottom line. You obviously had a bad feel for our place when you walked in the door. Hey I don't like every place I go. I don't go back. Understood...
If you know Zack and I , it takes "one bad experience for us too", kick you out or ban you for life from our restaurant...
Sometimes the feeling is mutual and hey thats okay!

over-rated, over-priced, and over-salted (not to mention rude)

I went downtown St. Pete yesterday, excited to hit the booming restaurant scene. I ended up at Z Grill with my family, and while the place seemed more like a dive bar then a restaurant, we decided to try it since the menu items looked tasty and somewhat unique.

It was about 10PM on a Saturday night, and I understand that it was kind of late, but there were a bunch of people and no excuse for the horrible service. Our waiter (Ray) was rude, unwelcoming, and basically a sarcastic ass. To make matters worse, the chips, the vegetable risotto, and the rice&beans tasted like pure salt. I am not exaggerating - I still don't understand how they served it to us. We didn't complain about our appetizer (although we should have - as we were sitting there dusting the layer of salt off our chips), but after the risotto, we simply told our waiter we couldn't eat our food because it was so salty.

He looked as us with a "I could care less, what do you want me to do?" expression, and grabbed my plate and took it back in a huff. I didn't even get a chance to try my blackened shrimp, but frankly, I don't think I missed anything.

They say if the food is mediocre, and the service is good, the customer will remember the meal fondly. The shrimp and goat cheese enchilladas and veggie tacos were delicious, but thanks to the bad attitude and poor customer service I am left with a bad taste in my mouth. All I can remember is the overload of Sodium Chloride, the overpriced menu, the long wait (people who got there after got their food first, but I let that go) and of course, the rude bald waiter.

It was hands down the worst service I have ever received in a restaurant. And we still left a tip.

We weren't trying to be difficult, but why should we be sorry, as the customer?

I work in the industry, so I know how it is after a long night and know what kind of customers can walk through the door. Some days I hate society, but I am always in service for the customer - he/she is my number one priority and I want to deliver the best quality while maintaining integrity.

I just want to say, I am almost embarrassed for Z Grille and hope they take time to read this. All it takes is one bad experience.

Anjali    08.17.08

another perspective on z grille

Z grille is great as long as you are prepared to pay $98 for tacos and beer, and made to feel unwelcome at 8:30 pm.
