But do these two great tastes taste great together?...

        By Brian Ries

Dinner and a movie -- it's an icon, the foundation of millions of date-nights every year, for romantic folks and platonic buds ranging in age from 12 to 96. Movie theaters and restaurants have existed for years in this symbiotic relationship, each gaining an advantage from the classic partnership. Why fuck with a good thing? Oh, people have tried to combine the two entertainment options into one unholy whole, with results that reflect the trials and tribulations of Dr. Frankenstein.

I first met Jaden (rhymnes with "maiden") Hair two years ago, in the drizzled, muddy parking lot of an organic farm stand. She came to my attention thanks to her blog -- steamykitchen.com -- which had hit the local scene a mere six months before and had already garnered a national following; and she brought Spam fried rice to the CL Sarastoa offices just because we commented on her site. The two of us bought produce, hit the grocery store

Alvarez spent the last seven years next to Marty Blitz in the kitchens of Mise En Place, Chef de Cuisine in Tampa's grande dame of modern American dining. He moved over the bridge to Harbour Island this summer to serve his own brand of cuisine in the casually elegant restaurant with expansive views across the

Sometimes it's a slur, sometimes a misguided attempt to classify a widely varied range of people. But when it comes to Ella's Americana Folk Art Cafe, it fits. Students know best: "Cheap" is the hallmark of quality....

        By Brian Ries

Do not use the word inexpensive. It conveys entirely the wrong sentiment. Inexpensive is a word marketing gurus spout when selling low-end versions of high-end products. It's a tool the wealthy use to determine socio-economic pecking order, to know when to sneer or raise an insouciant eyebrow, to peg poseurs striving for more than they can afford. Inexpensive implies reduced quality. Cheap, on the other hand, is a bargain. Getting something for less than it's worth. The hallmark of value.

This week, life threw a massive curve ball at Creative Loafing Media. Taken over by the NYC-based hedge fund to whom we owed a ton of money, each employee processed the news in a different way: sadness, optimism, relief. Me? I got shit-faced. On great wine. I figured if my family's legacy is going down, I should consume voluminous amounts of quality juice. Fast. However, the questioned remained ... which ones? So many choices, so little time to race and

It would be easy to paint Giuliano Hazan's success as an appendix to his mother's career. Marcella Hazan wrote the seminal Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking, which Jeffrey Steingarten predicted would "become the essential Italian cookbook for an entire generation." He was right. But it wasn't quite his mother's name that allowed Giuliano Hazan to create a career as a cooking instructor and cookbook author that reflects her own. Although this Sarasota resident has won multiple awards for both his

How lightly do I have to tread in this review? For a straight writer, reviewing a largely gay bar and restaurant owned by two gay men -- called Queenshead, for God's sake -- is tough to do without resorting to stereotypes and puns. Thankfully, the food is good enough to make all of that extraneous chatter moot. The owners are British ex-pats Paul Smith and Darren Conner. Conner has experience working in the restaurant and bar scene across the world,

Ever since this recession withered wallets around the world, it's been my quest to find the best deals. That's Jenna's thing and, despite my devotion to bacon peanut brittle and beef in all its forms, I tend to eat healthy meals as well. Have to justify the occasional binge, after all. Forget the tango -- malbec is fast becoming the beloved icon of Argentina. I wrote about this humble red grape back in 2006, when it was just creeping into the spotlight, but since then its popularity has spread like the macarena at a redneck wedding. And no wonder -- malbec is practically perfect. This disrespected French grape originally hails from Bordeaux, where it slaves for the hallowed cabernet sauvignon and merlot grapes. Winemakers use malbec to soften the often harsh

Choice. Angus. Natural. Organic. Humanely raised. Grass-fed. Prime. Wagyu. Kobe. These days, there are more marketing terms associated with beef than ever before, all of which attempt to separate you from your food budget with promises of better quality or better moral character. And it's important to know what those terms mean, especially if you're concerned about greening your meat. But for most folks, taste is the deciding factor. We might buy prime for the intense marbling, or Kobe and

The snooty side of food pairings preaches "No Wine with Salad." I fed on this falsehood for years, following the widely-held mantra like an evangelical wino. Then one day, a miraculous salad and vino combo made me rethink my reliance on traditional not-so-wisdom. Not that I was always so cool and contrarian. Before my re-awakening, I lapped up all the drivel wine magazines and writers spit out. But, like a rebellious teenager, I slowly realized it wasn't adding up. Salads
