Lashkar-e-Taiba sounds like the name of a perky, South Asian ice-dancing duo. "Taiba's triple lutz was the crowd pleaser, but it was Lashkar's flawless camel spin that really wowed the judges." But don't let the cute moniker fool you. Lashkar-e-Taiba is a terrorist group headquartered in Pakistan. It's a very, very, (very!) dangerous organization. Audience shouts: "How dangerous is it?" It's soooo dangerous, when she steps on a talking scale, the scale says "ouch." I'm sorry. That's how fat your

This whole War On Terror™ thing is way old. When it started, there were no iPods, Enron was one of the most widely admired companies in the world and the word Bluetooth sounded to most people like a dental affliction. This war has gone on for so long, in fact, that our war aims are no longer clear. The Iraq war was sold to the American people as an attempt to rid the Middle East of a WMD-wielding, terrorist-nurturing dictator.

With the print journalism biz heading down the crapper, many in my profession are pondering a career change. For a while I thought I might like to open a pub. I like chitchat. I like booze. The only down side is that I also like fresh air. I've also considered a career in dog-walking. I like dogs. I like walking. I even have a name for my business: What Up, Dog? Unfortunately, I don't think there are enough cooped-up pups

Barack Obama's not even president yet, but he's already honoring his controversial campaign pledge to hold face-to-face meetings with America's worst enemies. Last week he met with George W. Bush. Bush gave Obama a tour of some of the White House, including the Oval Office, the Lincoln Bedroom, the Nixon Incinerator, the William Henry Harrison Office Supply Closet, etc. The pair also discussed policy. Details were scant, but one of the topics likely was the ongoing conflict between the United

Barack Obama will become the 44th president of the United States in about nine weeks. This means we can reasonably expect all of the world's problems to be solved by May 2009. That may seem like a long time, but you have to remember -- the Obamas are getting a new puppy for their daughters. We all know how much time a new puppy can take up. Everyone's aware of the marquis problems Obama's likely to tackle: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan,

It's hard to remember sometimes that France and the United States actually are each other's oldest foreign friends. French assistance was critical to the success of the American Revolution against Great Britain. In fact, if not for French help, we'd probably all be speaking English right now. We repaid the favor -- most notably during the two world wars, when we twice helped the French drive out invading Germans. Yet despite being there for each other when it mattered, Franco-American

What a difference seven years makes. Back in '01, the days when Americans feared Russians as God-hating robots scheming to turn North America into a toilet-paperless, collectivized potato farm were but a far-off memory. Relations between the two nuclear giants were more than pleasant. In June '01, in fact, President Bush and then Russian President Vladimir Putin had their first face-to-face meeting. Talking to reporters afterward, Bush confessed bro-mantic feelings for his macho counterpart. "I looked the man in the

There's a debate going at the moment about the qualifications for office of our presidential candidates. Like many political discussions in the good ol' U.S. of A, it's taken an angry, irrational tone. This week, I offer solace. I want Republicans and Democrats alike to take comfort in knowing that, despite its flaws, our system could be a lot worse. We could be Thailand. Don't get me wrong. I try not to watch TV news, but sometimes it's on in stores or other people's houses and I get sucked in. Whether it's Fox or CNN, it inevitably pisses me off. More than anything, the thing that gets my goat is that there are still people getting paid to sound smart on TV who insist Bush's leadership of the War On Terror™ has been a great success. In recent weeks, these people keep crediting Bush for reducing violence in

Dear readers of this column who happen to be strolling through Sudan's capital city, Khartoum: You are hereby advised to be on the lookout for one Omar al-Bashir. Mr. al-Bashir is a black male, 64 years of age. He speaks Arabic, has two wives, wears lightly tinted eyeglasses, and is often seen in public wearing either an olive green shirt and pants with a matching beret, or white robes with a matching turban. He is known to frequent large government

Should Americans be frightened by Iran's recent missile tests? At least twice last week, Iran's military tested several ballistic missiles. Because footage of the test launches was recorded and released to the public by Iran's military, the tests were widely depicted in the Western media as Iranian saber-rattling. This writer strongly disagrees with that interpretation. Dick-waving is a far more appropriate metaphor for ballistic missile tests than saber-rattling. Metaphor preference notwithstanding, Western leaders were loudly displeased. Under-Secretary of State William

Is the United States going to attack Iran after all? I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong. In 2000, I thought there was no way American voters would let someone as obviously unintelligent and callow as George W. Bush anywhere near the White House. D'oh! Though I was opposed to the Iraq war, I still assumed Saddam Hussein had WMD. D'oh! In November 2004, I looked at a bunch of state polls, did what I thought was sound Electoral

Is the surge in Iraq working? Since the War On Terror™'s start in late 2001, there's been a metaphorical ping-pong match in the press about mainstream media coverage of the war. One side says the press is overly critical of the war, downplaying and often ignoring its successes. The other side is critical of the press for eschewing serious analysis of the war in favor of White House spin and/or mindless fluff that takes the public's focus away from the

As a younger man, I thought being dictator of a small-to-medium-sized African country would be a great gig. You get to live in a palace. African leaders never live in houses or mansions — always palaces. People are always nice to you, at least to your face. It's Africa, so the music's great and the weather's usually nice, if a tad on the hot side. You're close to the pyramids, Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and some nice beaches. And if you
