RE: Are pit bulls really all that dangerous?

Posted by David Jenkins on 04.29.09 @ 01:49 PM

Most cops can't train a pit bull to be a K9 officer because the police say the dogs are too friendly, and more interested in hanging out with humans and being sweet and all that jazz than tracking crooks.

I take huge issue though with the statement that "Bad owners, you know the types, often have large dogs that are or look like pitbulls."

I see more shitty snappy little purse dogs than other kind, but people find that acceptable since those dogs are tiny and the behavior is "cute" or "funny."

"Bad owners" carry their dogs around like babies or let them run wild because they are trying to be the dog's friend first, anthropomorphizing and projecting (or just being outright lazy and inattentive to the dog's needs), instead of proving a stable environment for the dog - as Cesar would say "acting as a pack leader."

ANY dog can be a biter. Unfortunately, the dogfighting industry has made a lot of problems where there doesn't need to be any - breeding aggression back into the dogs, inexperienced owners training dogs up to be me "mean" and simple ignorance in how to train a large breed dog. When you start picking up second chance dogs and don't know their backgrounds, you can get yourself into some issues if you're not careful and don't take the necessary steps.

You have to be way more skilled than you would be with a toy dog, because no one is ever going to think your German Shepard going apeshit any time someone comes near you is anywhere near as funny as if it was a Yorkie.

I've owned an aggressive pitbull, that was likely that way from some combination of breeding, imprinting and psychology from before we ever adopted her (and yes, even some things we failed to correct early enough on). I could tell a really long story about this, but in addition to the pain and heartache and years of trying with this animal - I have a lot of what would be very good reasons for siding right up to the "pit bulls = bad" camp.

I still don't hold it against the breed. I'd have another pit/staff/AB/bully breed dog. I also now own a 100-lb Rottweiler that's a big giant sweet baby, but who was raised properly and who I not only love but also respect and provide a stable, structured environment for so that she can be a dog and not have so many problems - like biting or aggression.

Most aggression tendencies in dogs are indicative of other problems and are typically not only preventable, but correctable.

Dog ownership is a huge responsibility, and people need to be smarter about what they're getting into breed by breed and choose one that suits their abilities and environment.

And for Pete's sake ladies and gentlemen - stop leaving your dogs around small kids. Small kids are at eye level with a dog and sometimes they take a a child's actions as threatening. There are ways to train your dog and kid up both to have a great, mutually respectful relationship. But a dog and child should ALWAYS be supervised at all times.

Making sure credit is given where it's due: despite all my social networking, JobsiteTheater.org is totally under the stewardship of Shawn Paonessa - who designs the whole thing and makes it go vroom. If anyone out there is looking for a website, this guy is for hire.

I wish in my own odd way that the recording of the whole interview done for this 10-year retrospective could have been run as a podcast. There were a lot of great stories told about many. There are so many people who make Jobsite great, and I think the world of all of you. Looking forward to 10 more years and beyond. To Babylon!

RE: Get Embedded

Please note there is a $10 ticket as of 30 minutes to curtain if you are a student, senior citizen (65+) or a member of the armed forces. You must pay in cash at the TBPAC Ticket Office and present a valid ID at the time of purchase. We recommend checking in advance to see if a performance is sold out or not before driving down.

It will indeed be interesting to see how this all goes down. Currently the rights are unavailable as there is both a potential national tour and a film of the play in the works.

Once all that dust settles, the play will undoubtedly go to the highest bidder.
