Sam French and Austin Ruffer star in Art

It's one thing to laugh at the sometimes-baffling manifestations of modern and contemporary art -- Jeff Koons' stainless steel bunny, Yves Klein's solid-blue canvases -- in a museum setting, but what happens when your best friend spends thousands of dollars on a minimalist painting and expects you to love it as much as he does? For Serge and Marc, two characters in Yasmina Reza's award-winning play, Art, a difference in opinion about Serge's newly acquired white-on-white abstract painting leads to the rapid disintegration of their 15-year friendship. As the two men discover they have less in common than they thought, a third friend, Yvan, attempts to mediate but only makes the conflict worse -- until a white lie saves the day. The Studio@620 production features current students and alumni of the Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School: actors Sam French, Austin Ruffer and Joe Stribling, and director/advisor Rod Hansen. July 5-6, 8 p.m. Sat., 7 p.m. Sun., 620 First Ave. S., St. Petersburg, $12, 727-895-6620, studio620.org.
